Guru Purnima: A Day to Thank Our Gurus in This Modern World

In our Indian tradition, we always respect the people who guide us. We touch the feet of our parents, teachers, elders, and saints. But above all, we bow to our Guru, because only the Guru shows us the right path in life. One such important day is Guru Purnima — a day specially kept aside to thank and remember the Guru with full heart and devotion.

Guru Purnima is not a new festival. It has been celebrated since many thousands of years in Bharat. Even now, when life has become fast and people are busy, this one day reminds us to stop, look within, and say, “Thank you, Guru.”

Why Guru Is Central in Our Dharma

In Indian tradition, Guru is not just a teacher of subjects or skills. Guru is the one who shows the path to the highest — to the Self, to Bhagwan, to Truth. That is why our scriptures declare:

Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheshwara
Guru Sakshat Parabrahma, Tasmai Shri Gurave Namah

The Guru is seen as a living embodiment of the Divine, who leads the disciple from ignorance to knowledge, from confusion to clarity, from bondage to freedom.

Even in the Taittiriya Upanishad, students are first taught:

Matru Devo Bhava, Pitru Devo Bhava, Acharya Devo Bhava, Atithi Devo Bhava
Respect your mother as Divine, father as Divine, teacher as Divine.

So in our tradition, the Guru comes even before Bhagwan, because without Guru, we may not even recognise Bhagwan when He stands before us.

Why We Celebrate Guru Purnima

Guru Purnima comes every year on the full moon day (Purnima) in the Hindu month of Ashada (June–July). It is the day when Bhagwan Veda Vyasa was born. He was the one who gave us the four Vedas, wrote the great Mahabharata, and taught deep spiritual knowledge to the world. Because of this, this day is also called Vyasa Purnima.

On Guru Purnima, we don’t just worship one person. We bow down to the Guru Tattva — the divine energy that helps us grow in life. Whether it is our spiritual Guru, school teacher, parents, or anyone who helped us in the right time — all are to be thanked on this day.

In simple words, the Guru is the light that removes darkness from our minds.

Old Tradition of Guru and Student

In ancient times, children used to go and stay in Gurukul — the home of the Guru. They lived a simple life, learnt Vedas, life values, and served the Guru with love and respect. The Guru was like a parent, guide, and protector.

This system was called the Guru–Shishya Parampara. It was not about only giving book knowledge. The Guru also taught discipline, humility, seva, and dharma. This beautiful relationship was full of trust and faith.

Even today, many people follow this path with their spiritual Gurus. They attend satsangs, follow instructions, chant mantras, and offer seva with pure heart.

Why Guru Purnima Is Important Today

In today’s time, people know many things. We have phones, internet, apps, and so much information. But still, many are confused, sad, or angry. This shows that knowledge alone is not enough. We need wisdom, peace, and guidance.

Only a true Guru can give that.

A Guru helps us understand who we are, how to live properly, and how to stay peaceful even in problems. That is why this day is not just a festival — it is a chance to connect with our roots.

JyotirGamaya Brings Seva to Your Home

  • Opens the door for spiritual growth

Even if you are living abroad or in another city, your devotion will reach the Guru. As our elders say, “The Guru always hears a true prayer from the heart.”

Let Us Offer Our Gratitude Together

In this busy world, we forget many things. But on this one day, let us remember those who helped us — who stood by us, who showed us the way.

Let us offer flowers of love, respect, and seva at the feet of our Gurus. Let this Guru Purnima be not just a date in the calendar, but a day of inner change.

You don’t need big money or big words. What matters is shraddha — sincere feeling in the heart. That is what the Guru accepts.
